Due to the disruption in most law students’ lives over the past few months, we have extended our scholarship deadline to June 1, 2020. There will be no in-person presentation this year.

The Aviation Law Section of the State Bar of Texas is pleased to announce the second year of its law school scholarship program being open to all Texas law schools. Every year, the Section awards a $1,000.00 scholarship to a student who has an interest in aviation law. All applicants will become members of the Aviation Law Section for one year at no cost to the applicant.

Students who apply must be in good standing at their law school, join the Aviation Law Section of the State Bar of Texas (we will enroll them), and express a desire to practice in aviation law. Each student will submit a brief discussing a recent aviation case decision. The top five briefs will be posted on the Section’s website with credit to the authors. The application deadline is April 1, 2020.

The winning brief will be announced by May 1, 2020. The scholarship recipient, along with a law-school professor of the recipient’s choosing, is invited to attend our Section Meeting to receive the scholarship and give a brief presentation on the case he or she analyzed, and is invited to attend dinner the night before with members and friends of the Section Council. The Section Meeting and CLE presentation will be held during the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas on June 25, 2020. Airfare, hotel, and dinner for the recipient and a professor will be paid for by the Aviation Law Section.

We invite you to share this information and the application with your colleagues and encourage law students you know to apply.

The Aviation Section of the State Bar of Texas is excited to announce the winner of the 2019 Aviation Law Scholarship: Austin L. Turman, a rising 2L at the University of Houston Law Center.  Austin’s interest in aviation comes from his father, a USAF veteran of the Gulf War who spent twenty-eight years as an air traffic controller with the FAA. Austin hopes to obtain his pilot’s license after law school, and pursue a career in aviation litigation or the FAA. Austin will give a brief presentation at our meeting during the State Bar Annual Meeting on June 13th.

Congratulations Austin!
